You have to put out more line on the boat rods than the board rods to get the same depth. Try this, let out your boat rod 8 bars, then tie a rubber band around the line.

If that's still the case then aluminum butts are the way to go, period. For $20-40 less a rod you can go with slick butts. You will gain some stability with the aluminum butts and certainly longevity.
