CHRONOLOGY. Manufactured from 1948 to 1989. . 1948. Breech bolt of Marlin Model 36 previously known as Model 1936. Model 93 and Model 1893) is changed from square to round in shape and rifle is re designated as Model 336 Carbine. Also introduced were Model 336SC Sporting carbine with two-thirds magazine tube.
But the 39 was in priduction from 1921 to 1938. Initially serial numbers had no prefix. Then the “S” prefix followed. After that came the HS prefix. so your is in the latter part. If original, your front sight might help narrow it down but there are ni records by year matching up serial numbers. You may have to post some pictures to help narrow down a date if you cannot find the serial number. The serial number will tell you when it was made. Try removing the butt stock to look for numbers on the side of the tangs. One thing we can tell you, is with the Micro-Groove rifling, it will hav been made sometime after 1954.Just got a new to me 39A and trying to figure when it was made. It appears to be very old. The rifle has only 3 digits in the serial number clearly stamped on the rear stock tang under the lever. The numbers are 590. These are the only numbers I can find on this rifle.

I've been curious for quite sometime now about this rifle as it's Serial # HS186 predates the earliest known high pressure designed Mod.39 by several hundred pieces according to the information in the Marlin Firearms book by William S. Brophy.

The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The first field covers numbers up through the Model 1897, the second only covers from 1948 and up. The "S" series was made in the 1920's, and as stamped, you have a Model 39, not a 39-A.
