Solution: you are not having the pet/thrall use the food, you are using it for yourself but from their inventory so the food item must be something the player character can eat/consume. It doesn't matter what food you put in their inventory, so long as it's food you yourself can eat.Empty your inventory of any existing aloe and try using a tool like sickle, axe or something.
