The Dawn of the Sixes. The Sixes were the product of Bill Ruger’s desire for some of that sweet, sweet double-action revolver market. It was the 1970s. Hair was long, cars were cool, and revolvers ruled the police market. Ruger made revolvers, but they were limited to the single-action variety, and the police and defensive market was huge.
I see the Speed Six as something of interest to the hard core Ruger collector. As a concealed carry gun, the SP101 is better suited. I have a Security Six 357 and a Service SIx 38 Special. The 357 is just an exceptional firearm (with its action job). The 38 Special was bought in like new condition and will never see enough rounds to wear it down.You will need the proper tools to unscrew the old barrel without damaging or bending the frame. It is unlikely that the new barrel will index correctly so you will need to remove material from the shoulder on the barrel and that will require resetting the barrel-cylinder gap and probably recutting the forcing cone. The first serial# shown for 1986 is 161-80082. Since yours falls between these numbers it is a 1985. Neon Horse.With the box and in excellent condition a late production Speed-Six would go for at least $500 around here. Add the Postal Inspector model to the mix and you're looking at a starting price of $700 - to the right person. The photo shows the scalloped recoil shield so it's a later gun.Like a lot of .357 Magnums in this era, the original Security could handle them mostly fine, but it wore out considerably faster when it consumed a diet of nothing but .357 Magnums. GunBroker has a lot of Six series guns but prices are creeping up. I'm also a huge fan of the Sixes, but even 2 years ago I was getting thrashed looking blue trade in .38 Service Sixes for $200.
