No, thats wrong. The knox infection will appear as "infected" on a wound, the same way a regular infection does. You cant tell the two apart on the menu itself, but you CAN'T be infected without a bite, scratch, or laceration from a zombie. So while there's no direct indication on the menu, you can figure it out with context.

But then after a few hours of clearing hordes, I get bitten and instantly turn to zombie. its like the debug setting changed the sandbox setting to instant zombification.

Just remember, on default settings every scratch/laceration made from a zombie has a chance to infect your character with the Knox virus by 7% and 25%, bites are 100%. If you get a scratch or laceration from falling over a fence or breaking a window, you will not get the Knox virus but you can still get an infected wound if not taken care of ...
