The reason the manufacturer went to an electric pump was because of fuel injection. The mechanical pump is easy to change if it fails, which it seldom does.

I installed a '03 6.0 with mild cam in our '97 TJ. I went with the '05 - '06 TJ fuel pump (RockAuto), converted the 6.0 fuel rail to a return-less rail ('05 GM 2500 - salvage yard) and GenRight tank. The '05 - '06 TJ pump is to be used with a return-less fuel system. Fuel system works excellent.If you suspect that the fuel return line is blocked, a simple test to do would be to remove the fuel return line and blow through it. If you can do this, then it is not blocked. Another test you can do is to put a fuel pressure gauge in the return line, run the engine through idle to about 1500 RPMs, and see what it reads.
