Other software may not have the exact same tools as Zbrush, but if you actually care, you WILL make the compromise to get your work done. If you wont make the compromise, you likely don't really care. Blender is a great option with tons of plugins available. Mudbox was abandoned by Autodesk, but is EXTREMELY affordable (something like $40).
Officially the website states you only get a year of updates with the perpetual. So that's 900 for one year of software updates. In practice though yes they have never charged again for updates and they were always free. A subscription is 39,95 a month so doing that for 2 years is about the same as 1 perpetual license (50 dollars more). The main way to save your work, I would say, is as a Project file, or ZPR, under the File palette instead of the Document one. This saves the most information, and can include your Undo history if you choose. Another format is to save as a Tool, or ZTL, under the Tool palette. Copy the Update.exe file. Open the folder where ZBrush has been installed and paste the file. Run the Update file and wait for it to finish. Open Crack folder > Copy ZBrush.exe file. Paste in the installed location and make sure the original file is overwritten with the crack. ZBrush Mac users: Follow the instructions in the dmg file.

Yeah, zooming the canvas usually does this. Deeply annoying, relic of the 2.5d system that underlies everything in Zbrush. If you can't figure out how to zoom it back out, just copy the tool, then paste it into one of the standard zprojects like dog or female head. Delete the dog or head, then save.
