Tulum is beautiful. We went from Puerto Morelos, and our tour guide was specifically from PM so that won't help you. Tulum is closer to the hotel zone than Chichen Itza. 1. Re: Chichen Itza - Self driving or a tour. Whether you do it on your own or book a private tour I'd recommend trying to fit in time for a visit to Vallodalid. Not only is that a nice place to grab a meal but there's a cenote right in the city you can visit. It's very colonial and much more "true" Mexico than Cancun.
