Feb 11, 2024 · Thanked 3,194 Times in 1,107 Posts. The 3 1/4 - 1 1/4 load is the Gold Standard, in my humble opinion. I used to shoot box birds once a week, and did so for quite a few years. Estimated 40,000+ birds over my "career". My go-to load was the Federal Flyer, or Gold Medal in the above settings, only with #8 shot.

Check out RST's non-tox loads. My father took ducks with a 20 gauge Trojan imp cylinder and mod back in the 30's using modest 7/8 oz loads, but I think he waited to smell their breath before he shot.

They work well and look right on a vintage sxs but they do add a bit of weight to the stock; how that works for you is up to you. I've also had good luck with an Accu-Riser neoprene riser that attaches via a velcro strap (CP5000s).
