I've been going to the Outer Banks almost religiously since the spring of '84. The first 25 or so years were spent in hotels/motels, which seem to have become an endangered species over the last decade and a half. The last 5 years have involved rental cottages, which have been hit or miss.

You do not want to step on one of those guys and they will avoid you although they are mighty tasty. The surf is due to pick up later in the weekend from Hurricane Emily but I doubt Emily will pose any real threat to the Outer Banks except for high tides and rip currents.
