Mar 3, 2010 · Around here the 2940 was the 3rd worst tractor Deere ever built (behind a 2840 or a 8630 ). The 2 spd gave trouble as well as the hyd.'s. The early 5500's had some issues as well. The 2750 is the only one of the 3 I would even consider. "You can't pay too much for a good tractor, and you can't buy junk cheap enough."

Noise from the main pump is most likely coming from the main pump drive. Check condition of Cushion #3, Couplings #2 and #4, Cap Screws #5, Splines inside Drive Shaft #6 and Splines on Pump Shaft.
